In sub-Saharan Africa, 1 in 2 women diagnosed with breast cancer have died within 5 years after diagnosis, compared with fractions in the USA of 1 in 5 for Black women and 1 in 10 for White women.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer type in women in sub-Saharan Africa, affecting 129,000 women who were newly diagnosed in 2020. It is projected to nearly double by 2040 due to population ageing and expansion.
Studies also showed that the number of maternal orphans due to breast cancer exceeds the number of breast cancer deaths among women in sub-Saharan Africa. For every 100 deaths in women younger than 50 years, there were 210 new orphans.
But as grim as these figures are right now, many of these deaths are avoidable, lives can be saved, and the intergenerational consequences of maternal deaths, and maternal orphans in the region can be prevented.
